Lore & Background

The previous lore section incorrectly attributed the creation of the Conkeror web browser to Shawn Betts. While factually correct for the browser, this has no bearing on the Conker video game series. No such 'Open World Map' mechanic exists in Conker games.

In Their Own Story

Say 'Conkeror' out loud, and you'll sound just like someone saying 'Konqueror'—the KDE web browser. To avoid confusion, the Conkeror FAQ insists the full spoken name is 'Conkeror (with a C).' But where does the name come from? Two places: first, the winner of a game of conkers—a delightfully chaotic British children's pastime involving horse chestnuts on a string—and second, a brand of beer also called Conkeror. So the browser is named after a nut-fight champion and a pint. That's a pedigree.

Reader's Guide

Conkeror puts the power of Emacs-style keybindings into your web browsing. Press 'f' (for 'follow'), and every clickable element on the page gets a numbered label. Type the number and hit Enter to follow the link—or start typing the link's text to narrow the choices. When only one match remains, it turns green, gets numbered '1', and Enter takes you there. Buffers replace tabs: multiple pages stay open, and you navigate them with keybindings like C-u C-f (open link in new buffer), C-u C-g (open URL or search in new buffer), or C-u C-h i (open start page in new buffer). Cycle through buffers with M-n (next) and M-p (previous). C-x b brings up a buffer list you can navigate with arrow keys. Customization is done in JavaScript—Conkeror's answer to Emacs Lisp—letting you rebind keys, write new commands, and mold the browser to your will.
